A Graphic Designers Direct Mail CV

So how do you get a job once you graduate?

Theres the obvious email, job sites or attending seminar and advertising fairs amongst many others. Then theres Direct Mail! Im not saying this is the right way by any means or the most creative, but if you find out the the correct name of the art director, creative director, account manager etc of who you want to impress and send it addressed to them specifically, it can be a way of grabbing attention.

So I took a shot, back in June 2009 after graduation,  inspired by an Australian art director’s CV I created an A3 teaser with two inlaying cards, initially trying to gain an interview. I think I sent out about 30 and heard back from 2, one of which I gained a job at in London. 2 / 30 isn’t the best odds (you could even class it a fail) but it was worth a shot, most post people receive is junk mail, so my thinking was that a little interactive piece maybe that one letter different.

The front contained basic info with the inlaying card overlapping the bottom two words.

The back followed the same principle, but gave a little insight into who I am.

With the cards removed it revealed more wording and the cards themselves also had information written on the back of them.

Finally the work itself took up a full side of A4 with small numbered captions explaining the sample’s of work.

Hopefully this will give you a little inspiration if your designing your own CV. Who knows the best way to apply for a job? But I reckon just be creative and give anything a go and see what happens.

The Cardboard Box That Fits Anything Perfectly

A waste of time or a great innovational piece? It can be folded into any size box and a wide range of  different shapes, handy for all those awkward pieces of Ebay items you need to send. I wonder how solid the box itself is?

Day 5

Well terrible night sleep last night…Why cant someone invent something so that we don’t have to sleep anymore! Also smashed something in the morning whilst getting it out of the dish washer, so overall bad start to the day. From this it got me thinking about other things that can smash, or more so that cant smash but could possibly be made to look like they have so I started to More »

Day 4

Well same old usual sleep, weather is looking pretty grim outside which I should expect I suppose being in England. Today was pretty simple I looked around my room for things I could shape into objects. I wanted to use something that I could manoeuvre and keep together whilst creating a form, similar to peeling an orange all in one go! So I used some string and toilet paper to More »
